Machine learning infers microbial relationships
April 2018
I wrote this piece for publication on Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering website. I spent time with Professor Marculescu, understanding the implications of machine learning on the bio-physical world. Marculescu is thrilled with the potential applications of this research and the impacts they'll have on diagnosing, treating, and more importantly preventing, illness. A highly-technical and complicated topic, it was important for this story to be reader-friendly and accessible. I feel I accomplished this and then some.
A high-tech spin on spider silk
April 2018
I wrote this story for publication on Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering website, as well as the college's Mechanical Engineering page. To prepare this story, I took a deep dive into the world of polymers. I gained a strong understanding of traditional polymer formation as well as the truly innovative approach Dr. Shen and his team are taking in their creation. As a result of this research, as well as the analysis of numerous interviews with Dr. Shen, I developed a narrative that is both accessible and clear in educating readers on Dr. Shen's truly groundbreaking work.
Blast from the past
March 2018
I wrote this piece for publication on Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering website. I crafted this narrative after spending an extended period of time interviewing Professor Domach, learning about him and his spectroscopy reactor. With this being such a complicated, dense topic, it was important to find a thread that 1) made it immediately accessible to common readers and 2) clearly communicated the importance of Domach's involvement in the NIH's research. I feel I accomplished both in this well-received, frequently syndicated story.
...in with the good

Professor Keith Cook recently received funding to continue R&D on his ground-breaking artificial lung technology. In composing this story, I worked closely with Professor Cook to ensure my narrative hit the mark with regard to the innovative aspects of his research. I saw this story through numerous iterations, each moving closer to the ultimate goal of positioning CMU Engineering and Professor Cook at the forefront of biomedical advancements.
Light weight, lower costs in 3D printing
September 2017

In doing so, I presented a topic that is both innovative and complicated in order to render it accessible to the widest possible audience.
X spinoff Dandelion looks out for homeowners and mother nature
August 2017
I wrote this story for publication in The Chautauquan Daily as a follow-up to a story I'd written earlier in the summer of 2017. While interviewing Obi Felten, head of getting moonshots ready for contact with the real world at X (formerly Google X), I learned that one of the projects she oversaw was being launched as its own independent company. I interviewed the co-founder and CEO of Dandelion, Kathy Hannun, and shared her story of conceptualizing and developing the geothermal home heating company into an innovative and impactful business.

“If a story is not about the hearer, he will not listen. And here I make a rule – a great and interesting story is about everyone or it will not last.”
